Thankful That God Hears Us: Finding Confidence in Every Season

In life, we all experience moments of joy and peace, as well as times of uncertainty and challenge. At Calvary Orlando, the November 24th sermon invited us to reflect on a profound truth: God always hears us. Whether in seasons of abundance or valleys of struggle, this confidence can transform how we navigate life. Today, let’s delve into the message, inspired by John 11, Psalm 23, and other scriptures, to understand how we can remain thankful that God hears us, always.

Jesus’ Confidence in Prayer
In John 11, Jesus stood before the tomb of His friend Lazarus. In that moment, amidst sorrow, mourning, and opposition, Jesus confidently declared:
"Father, I thank You that You hear me. I know You always hear me."
This simple yet profound statement reminds us of a foundational truth: God hears us, regardless of the circumstances. Jesus modeled a relationship of trust with the Father, even in moments of grief and challenge. We too can adopt this confidence, knowing that God’s presence is unwavering.

Psalm 23: God’s Presence in Every Season
Psalm 23 beautifully illustrates God’s faithfulness in both peaceful and trying times. David writes about green pastures and still waters—a metaphor for rest and provision. But the psalm also acknowledges the "valley of the shadow of death," a season of deep darkness.
David’s declaration in the valley is powerful:
"I will fear no evil, for You are with me."
The circumstances may change, but God does not. Whether we are celebrating on the mountaintop or enduring the valley, His love, guidance, and presence remain constant. Our response? To trust, worship, and lean on His promises.

The Table in the Valley
Psalm 23 also reminds us of a remarkable truth:
"You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies."
This table represents abundance, provision, and God’s sustaining power, even in the hardest seasons. Importantly, this table points us to Jesus, the ultimate provision. Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35). When we look to Him in the valley, we find the strength, peace, and sustenance we need to continue.
When the Israelites doubted God in the wilderness, they asked, “Can God prepare a table in the desert?” (Psalm 78:19). His response was manna from heaven, a precursor to the true Bread of Life—Jesus. Today, no matter our "desert" or "valley," we are invited to see the table God has prepared for us and partake of His presence and provision.

Practical Ways to Engage with the Table

How do we partake of the table of the Lord in challenging seasons? The sermon outlined four practical steps:
  1. Engage with God’s Word
In times of difficulty, the Bible is a source of life and encouragement. Instead of turning to distractions, turn to His Word for guidance and comfort.
  2. Pray Consistently
Prayer is more than asking; it’s communing with God. In valleys, don’t merely talk about prayer—commit to it.
  3. Participate in Communion
Communion reminds us of Christ’s sacrifice and His unwavering commitment to us. It’s a tangible act of trust and worship, even in hard times.
  4. Stay Connected to Community
The body of Christ is vital. In tough seasons, resist the urge to isolate. Instead, lean on your church family for support, encouragement, and prayer.

Anointed for the Valley
In the valley, God’s anointing is upon us. The oil in Psalm 23 symbolizes the Holy Spirit, empowering us for the journey. While we may feel weak, His strength is perfected in our weakness. The anointing equips us not only to survive but to thrive in the face of adversity.
As the sermon noted, the anointing is often present because we face battles. It’s God’s ability working through us to accomplish His will. We are reminded that greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4).

Worship in the Valley
Worship is a powerful response in the valley. While we may be waiting for external breakthroughs, we don’t have to wait for God’s presence. Worship invites His presence into our circumstances and reminds us of His faithfulness. As we worship, we shift our focus from the valley to the One who walks with us through it.

God’s Faithfulness Pursues Us
The sermon concluded with a beautiful promise from Psalm 23:
"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life."
In Hebrew, the word "follow" means "to pursue." Even in the valley, we are pursued by God’s goodness and steadfast love. When we stop running and look back, we’ll see not shadows, but the overwhelming faithfulness of God.

Today, as we reflect on this powerful message, let us declare with confidence:
"Father, I thank You that You hear me."
Whether you are in a season of peace or walking through a valley, know this: God hears you, He is with you, and His love is unchanging. Embrace the table He has prepared for you—through His Word, prayer, communion, community, and worship.
