Have you ever asked yourself, "Am I truly following Jesus?" It’s a question every believer must answer. In today’s culture, it’s easy to profess faith in Christ but harder to practice true discipleship—the kind of faith that demands surrender, commitment, and daily obedience.
In this post, we dive into the biblical meaning of discipleship and what Jesus Himself says about following Him.
What Does It Mean to Follow Jesus?
Many people assume following Jesus means simply believing in Him, attending church, or being a “good person.” But Jesus gives a much deeper and more challenging definition.
In Luke 9:23, Jesus says:
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”
Three Key Aspects of True Discipleship
Are You a Fan or a Follower?
There’s a difference between admirers of Jesus and true disciples. A fan likes Jesus’ teachings but doesn’t commit to transformation. A follower lives out their faith daily, submitting every part of their life to Him.
Ask Yourself:
✅ Have I truly surrendered my life to Jesus?
✅ Do I make daily choices that reflect my faith?
✅ Is Jesus Lord of my finances, relationships, and career?
✅ Am I willing to put His mission above my own desires?
The Cost of Discipleship
Jesus makes it clear that following Him is not easy, but it leads to eternal rewards. He warns in Luke 9:25:
“What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?”
The world teaches us to chase success, money, and self-fulfillment, but Jesus calls us to seek God’s kingdom first (Matthew 6:33).
Key Takeaways:
✔️ Following Jesus requires total surrender.
✔️ True discipleship means living a transformed life.
✔️ Jesus must be Lord over every part of your life—not just Sunday mornings.
✔️ There is a cost to following Jesus, but the reward is eternal life with Him.
Are You Ready to Truly Follow Jesus?
If you’ve been living a lukewarm faith, today is the day to make a real commitment. True discipleship isn’t about convenience—it’s about surrender, trust, and transformation. The choice is yours: will you simply admire Jesus from a distance, or will you follow Him with your whole heart?

Three Key Aspects of True Discipleship
- Deny Yourself – Following Jesus requires us to surrender our personal desires, ambitions, and comforts to align with His will.
- Take Up Your Cross Daily – True discipleship means embracing challenges, spiritual discipline, and sometimes even suffering for the sake of Christ.
- Follow Him – This means we don’t just believe in Jesus, but we actively imitate His life, teachings, and mission.
