This past Sunday at Calvary Orlando was a day of celebration as our church family witnessed powerful moments of baptism. Baptism is more than just water. It is a declaration of new life in Christ.
From Filth to Freedom
Pastor Maria reminded us of those childhood days when we would come inside after hours of playing outside, only to realize we were covered in dirt. In the same way, many of us do not realize the weight of sin until the light of Jesus shines on our hearts. Sin is rebellion against God, but the cross of Christ changes everything.
The Bible says in Acts: “Repent and be baptized.” Repentance is more than saying sorry. It is turning around and walking a new direction. Baptism then becomes the outward symbol of that inward decision.
A Funeral and a Resurrection
Baptism is, in a way, a funeral. Something must be buried:
As Pastor Kevin reminded us, when we go under the water, these things stay buried. But when we rise up, we are raised with Jesus into new life, freedom, and victory.
Born Again and In Christ
Jesus said we must be “born again.” This is not a cultural phrase to laugh off. It is a Biblical truth. When we come out of the waters of baptism, we are a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).
That means:
Still in Process
Baptism does not mean perfection. It means transformation has begun. Our mind, will, emotions, and habits are still being renewed day by day. But we walk this journey in the strength of the Holy Spirit and the support of our church family.
Why Baptism Matters in Orlando Today
In a culture searching for authenticity, Christian baptism is a bold statement of faith. It declares that Jesus is Lord, that the old life is gone, and that new life is here. Baptism marks the start of a new life and a lifelong walk with Christ.

A Funeral and a Resurrection
Baptism is, in a way, a funeral. Something must be buried:
- The old self – our selfish ways are crucified with Christ.
- The sinful nature – our past sins and failures are left behind.
- Our past identity – the labels the world placed on us no longer define us.
As Pastor Kevin reminded us, when we go under the water, these things stay buried. But when we rise up, we are raised with Jesus into new life, freedom, and victory.

Jesus said we must be “born again.” This is not a cultural phrase to laugh off. It is a Biblical truth. When we come out of the waters of baptism, we are a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).
That means:
- We no longer see ourselves as bound by sin, but hidden in Christ.
- We face temptation and trials differently because God is with us.
- We live with a new identity, new family, new language, and new hope.
Still in Process
Baptism does not mean perfection. It means transformation has begun. Our mind, will, emotions, and habits are still being renewed day by day. But we walk this journey in the strength of the Holy Spirit and the support of our church family.
